On Monday, Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni met with Pastors and evangelists at Lugogo Cricket Oval.
Below is the address of Pastor Robert Kayanja of Rubaga Miracle Centre
Beloved this was my message during the Pastors meeting with the President of Uganda on 23rd /September 2019..
Your Excellency, The President of the Republic of Uganda, Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, on behalf of all of us here today, we are grateful that you have accepted to find time and come to address the Pastors and Evangelist’s gathering, the first of its kind in the history of our nation, and to teach us on how to eradicate poverty. As it is also written in the Holy Bible, when our Lord Jesus Christ was anointed by the Holy Spirit, the first thing He dealt with was poverty as He declared in Luke Chapter 4; “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor…”(Luke 4:18).
I want personally thank you for accepting to come and these people who are gathered here are servants of God and have come from all districts of Uganda. Some others couldn’t attend due to unavoidable circumstances.
The Genesis of this meeting, as you may recall Your Excellency, was on the 30th August 2014 in a meeting I had with you and the First Lady in Mbarara at Omubilizi Sserawadda’s residence, the father of Lt. Col. Nakalema. We discussed how you could reach out to pastors and evangelists on wealth creation and how to eradicate poverty. This operation needs preachers.
First, allow me Your Excellency to reveal who these men and women are, Pentecostal Born-Again or Holy Spirit filled Born-Again preachers (abebiwempe).
Pentecost in the Old Testament
The word Pentecost is a Greek word pentēcostē which means “fiftieth.” It refers to the “fiftieth day” after the children of Israel were delivered from 430 years of bondage in Egypt. Pentecost was a feast that was instituted by God through Moses in approximately 1688 B. C.
The Feast of Pentecost or Shavuot has many names in the Bible: In the Old Testament, it was not called Pentecost, it was called the “Feast of Weeks,” the “Feast of Harvest,” and “The Latter First fruits.”
It was a celebration honoring the Lord as provider of all crops and as the One who deserved the first fruits of those crops.
It is first mentioned in Exodus 23: 13-17, and it also appears in Deuteronomy 16:16-17 and in Leviticus 23:15-16.
Celebrated on the fiftieth day after Passover, Shavuot is traditionally a joyous time of giving thanks and presenting offerings for the new grain of the summer wheat harvest in Israel.
Pentecost in the New Testament
In Christian circles this day became known as “Pentecost,” the time when the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Church to begin God’s harvest of both Jews and Gentiles to the Christian faith.
This event came as the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise to send forth his Spirit upon His church, (Luke. 24:49; John. 14:25-26; 15,26; Acts 1:8, Joel 2:28).
Pentēcostē itself is used three times in the New Testament: Acts 2:1; 20,16; 1 Corinthians 16:8; It has become an established day in the Christian liturgical year. We believe that from Genesis, that is why our link with Israel is very strong.
Therefore it is evident that the Pentecostal Church is the oldest Church or faith of all the faiths being practiced today, and it has been here at least 2,000 years ago and the foundation of it nearly 4,000 years ago.
Even though other religious leaders always say we departed from them and that we should return to them, I say that they are the ones who left they should return to Pentecost. We are born Again, Bible believing, children of the Living God. Glory and praise be to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for all this growth.
In Uganda, Pentecostalism took time to arrive. It first appeared at Kitsbasi in Bugisu in 1959.
However, on 21st September 1977, the same year the Anglicans were celebrating their centenary, Idi Amin, after killing Archbishop Janan Luwum in February of the same year, banned our churches. Many pastors were killed, while others were thrown in prison until 1979, when Uganda received a partial Liberation by the UNLF and Tanzanian forces. I call it partial because though about that time many indigenous Churches that were not visionary founded started emerging like Miracle Centre and others, and they got rid of Idd Amin, yet they left a lot of other things undone.
But a miracle happened in 1986 when the NRA/NRM came into power and Uganda received a full liberation and this has been exemplified by the following aspects:
1. Freedom of Worship
2. Freedom of Association
3. Liberalization of the Economy and many more.
Your Excellency, when you came to power, you stood your ground, and spelt it out very clear that you would not curtail the freedoms of the Pentecostal Born-again churches (Biwempe Churches). You granted freedom of worship to this oldest historical “Church” also known as Eklesia in Greek, Synagogue in Hebrew, Kanisa in Swahili, Ekunganiro lya Batukuvu mu Luganda and Nying Kanicha in Luo.
In 1986 we were less or just about 10,000 Pentecostal Born-again Christians in total. After 30 years we have become 3.9 million according to conservative census figures.
If a thorough census were to be carried out now Mr. President, that number would climb up to over 6 million people to date. We are the fastest growing faith in the land and around the world. We are made up of free but independent ministries with a population of between 700 million – 1 billion believers worldwide.
Your Excellency, if we can move this population here in Uganda of 3.9 million to middle income status, if we can empower this group, because they don’t drink, they don’t spend money on dubious things, we would have unleashed a new force in building our nation like the Puritans did in the United States of America. We can do this by working with you Your Excellency, and we want to ordain you the Chief Puritan, because you have a pure heart.
Seymour Prophecy impact:
Your Excellency, we have found that you are right in the middle of the prophecy of 1909 that was given by a gentleman called William J. Seymour the initiator of the modern Pentecostal movement. Seymour, an African American ex-slave was the leader of the Azusa Street revival that began on Azusa Street, Los Angeles, California, on April 9, 1906 and continued roughly until 1915. The Holy Spirit came upon whites and blacks gathered in Azusa Street, in a time of great racial discrimination.
Seymour prophesied that after 100 years, another revival greater than the one at Azusa would emerge and would touch the whole world. The 100 years he prophesied began in 2009.
When we look at where we have come from and where we are going, when we look at our armed forces, the way they treat people and the exemplary way they behave both home and abroad, even the way you Your Excellency responds to hostile challenges and the way you have united and defended the country, it is amazing. The world over, we are the only country that treats refugees with dignity, and what is happening here is not happening anywhere else in the world at the moment.
The development of infrastructure such as road construction all across the country, the population growth, and our standing in the world are all proofs that something unusual is happening in Uganda. It is very hard to find a First Lady as sold out to God as ours. Even in your own family, you father one of us, Pastor Patience M. Rwabogo. It is evident that the hand of God is upon us. In this meeting, we pray that as you leave here, the Holy Spirit will go with you.
We also want to express our sincere appreciation to Your Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for accepting the voice of God and granted us our freedom we so long needed. Thank you Mr. President and the NRM government. In one of the languages of Southern Africa there is a saying that describes those who are ungrateful “KUSA TENDA HUROYI,” meaning “TO BE UNGRATEFUL IS WITCHCRAFT.”
Your Excellency and my fellow servants of God, it seems we all have something in common, the NRM with its correct ideology and we here with our correct theology, we know that poverty is both mental and spiritual.
About the claim that we are just noisemakers:
Your Excellency, you have been fed a lot of lies concerning our way of worship, that we are just noisemakers, we waste a lot of time and according to some people, we are doing nothing.
Dear Mr. President, we know that there are 8 hours in a day. If one uses 8 hours to work, and 8 hours to rest, they still have 8 more hours to kill. We choose to use our 8 hours to seek the Lord, instead of being in “bufunda.”
Resurrection of religious intimidation:
Your Excellency, it is unfortunate that right now there are some people who want to undermine that freedom. They are using the positions you have given them and they want to re-invent or rename your baby. These freedoms that Uganda is enjoying now, that is, press, worship, religion, assembly, expression, movement, business, politics, are because the Lord anointed you and you accepted the call, and you have sole-handedly enabled it to happen. We are the evidence today, in this forum that you were right to stand against those religious leaders who did not want us to exist.
Now Mr. President, this issue of religious intimidation has resurrected through Rev. Father Lokodo’s policy.
At this juncture, I would like to thank the Miracle Centre Cathedral for sponsoring this gathering and paying for all the food. Your Excellency, even the food we are going to serve today as well as the 10 bulls, have come from Miracle Centre Cathedral farm. In addition to that, these people have transported themselves and they will take themselves back with the exception of a few who have been assisted, especially those coming from long distance. I also want to express my sincere appreciation for our esteemed working committee.
The 400 years of slavery are over, and Africa is no longer under a curse. There is no more bondage in Africa. We believe it’s time for the Church to stand as the Josephs and together with you our beloved leader; we work together to build our land. That is why we believe in the Joseph Principle, Solomon’s wisdom, which we have come to seek from you, and we also believe in responsibility, which witchcraft is taking away from the people, because it makes them blame someone else for their predicament and never take responsibility for their actions.
1. The need to move the 3.9 million Born-again Christians into middle income status:
Your Excellency, if we can move this population here in Uganda of 3.9 million to middle income status, if we can empower this group, because they don’t drink, they don’t spend money on dubious things, we would have unleashed a new force in building our nation like the Puritans did in the United States of America.
2. Request for a Day of Pentecost public Holiday
We humbly request our government grant us a National public Holiday on the day of Pentecost.
There are between 700 million – 1 billion Born-again Pentecostal believers around the world, and if this request is granted, Uganda will be the first nation in the whole world to recognize this day on a national level. We promise that next year on this particular day, Uganda may host over 10,000- 20,000 believers from allover the world to come to inaugurate this day. This will enhance our tourism as a country and help in boosting our economy.
3. The Lokodo Policy
We request your intervention regarding this policy. The Lokodo Policy imposes an unconstitutional burden and hardship on the Pentecostal Born-again professors.
We pray that as you leave this place, the Holy Spirit will go with you.
