The Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has urged the European Union to respect the cultural values of Ugandans.
She made the remarks while meeting a delegation of European Union in Uganda, led by Ambassador Jan Sadek. He was accompanied by among others, Guillaume Chartrain, the Deputy Head of Department Politics and Press.
Among stressed that as Kampala and Brussels seeks to strengthen existing ties, there is need to have mutual respect on both sides.
“I asked European Union to respect our cherished values, beliefs, and cultural norms because our people hold them dear. A respectful partnership with one another is what we stand for,” Among said.
Ambassador Sadek hailed Uganda’s role in stabilising the region, according to Among.
Social media comments were quick to link her remarks to the ongoing standoff between large parts of Africa and the west over homosexuality.
The practice is illegal in Uganda and the country’s leaders always speak with one voice in condemning the vice.
As the Speaker met the EU delegation, her deputy Thomas Tayebwa, directed the Education Committee of parliament to comprehensively investigate a thread of alleged homosexual practices in Ugandan schools.
In his communication to Members on Tuesday afternoon, Tayebwa said the country is concerned about the increasing cases of homosexuality and lesbianism in schools.
