President Yoweri Museveni commemorated the 76th birthday of First Lady Maama Janet Museveni at the UWESO Masulita Children’s Village (MCV) in the Wakiso district.
The event underscored the historical significance of Masulita in Uganda’s liberation struggle and highlighted the First Lady’s impactful contributions to the nation’s education sector.
“Masulita holds historical significance in our struggle, and I was glad that we celebrated Maama Janet’s 76th birthday at the UWESO school,” President Museveni stated. “I congratulate Maama on making 76 years, and I thank God for keeping us safe and granting us long life.”
The UWESO Masulita Children’s Village, commissioned in 1989, has played a vital role in supporting orphaned and vulnerable children. President Museveni praised Maama Janet for her visionary leadership and the establishment of UWESO, an initiative that has significantly benefited many children across Uganda.
“I also congratulate her for the concept of UWESO. It was her idea, and I am glad it has helped so many children. What she did was implement the NRM vision and demonstrate that free education is possible.”
The President reflected on the inception of Universal Primary Education (UPE) and Universal Secondary Education (USE), initiatives aimed at ensuring that the government supports the underprivileged population.
“We initiated UPE and USE with the vision of ensuring that the government takes care of the underprivileged population in Uganda,” he emphasized.
Despite the success of these programs, President Museveni acknowledged the challenges faced in their implementation, particularly from some local leaders, teachers, and politicians who view children from low-income families as a source of income.
“As a result, children from low-income families are being denied access to education. Nevertheless, we are committed to ensuring the successful implementation of this program.”
